A hoard of Roman silver coins discovered in Romania

A metal detectorist has found a hoard of Roman silver coins near the village of Letta Veche in southern Romania. As per Romanian law, the hoard was presented to Letta Veche. The site of the find was secured by the local police to be protected and professionally excavated later.

Initial analysis indicates that oldest coin dates to 54 AD, during the reign of Nero and the most recent dates to 161 AD, in the reign of Marcus Aurelius. The coins are heavily worn indicating that they were circulated for many years before being collected into the hoard.

The coins will be transferred to County Directorate for Culture before they are allocated to Teohari Antonescu County Museum in Giurgiu.
